[MISC] Dance Month 2018 at JCC via The Dance DiSH

Some good post-Harvey news coming in for the new year of dance across TX–Dance Month is back in action! I’ve always wanted to attend JCC’s Dance Month but unfortunately never had time while I lived in HTX, honestly missing performances sometimes because of work stress and sometimes because of introvert stress… just another dance event regret in my life.

Among the many sad stories we’ve all heard here in Houston since Hurricane Harvey tried to wash us away, one of the saddest is when someone finds out exactly what their insurance policy covered—and most importantly what it did not. Standing in the hallway just behind the reception desk at the Evelyn Rubinstein Jewish Community, Maxine Silberstein points to lower level rooms, one of which was her office, which are visible through large windows but inaccessible to guests. She tells me they found out that most of that level was not covered by insurance. The lower level included many classrooms, a dance studio, and a great deal of their electrical plant. It will cost into seven figures to repair.

What I like about Dance Month (now in its 38th year) is the attention to community and heritage, how everyone has a place in this one international, cultural parade of a city and can share with one another through dance and music. It might not be the longest-running, most spectacular spectacular in HTX, but each performance/workshop/lecture is a family affair in the sense that everyone, from dancers near and far to friends and families to local newcomers, is welcomed. I’m especially excited for NYC’s own Peridance Contemporary Dance Company residency and this year’s “A Cultural Journey through India” with Dr. Rathna Kumar and Venugopal Josyula from the Anjali Center for Performing Arts, who help preserve and perform various forms of Indian dance at its finest as pictured in my featured image.

And a little note–not to discredit those major performing companies in the Theater District with their major donors and grants–but due to very real and very expensive damages from Harvey, ERJCC is a local nonprofit more than deserving of your support and this hashtag: #HoustonStrong
